4 Things to Know BEFORE You Give Your Pet CBD

by Sativa Remedy on January 3, 2019.

It’s exciting for us to witness the push of hemp and cannabinoid use for humans and pets. However, because companies exist that want to profit from selling products that I wouldn’t even trust to consume, it’s important to know some key facts before giving your fur-family any type of CBD products .

Is it hemp or cannabis?

Sativa Remedy never recommends giving animals any cannabis or hemp product with substantially high levels of activated THC.

This may seem counter-intuitive, given the track record with THC and human consumption, but we must understand 2 things.

1. Animals do not have the advanced faculties, as humans do, to mentally process activated THC. For humans, we know that it’s highly psychoactive and euphoric nature. For animals, this is not recommended.
2. Many animals are considerably less in body mass than humans, they must be dosed accordingly.

CBD OIL, pet CBD

Short of deer standing next to a burning wild cannabis bush, it is extremely unlikely animals would encounter activated THC in the wild. Eating raw cannabis plants hardly contains activated THC, and probably always existed as a great source of nutrition for the many millennia the plant has existed.

This makes hemp a perfect solution for your pet. Hemp naturally contains low enough in activated THC, but high enough in other 85+ cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBN. Hemp naturally occurs with high levels of the cannabinoid, CBD. This molecule, along with cannabinoids and phytonutrients found in the hemp plant are therapeutic by nature to pets.

Ingredient List.

Be sure to check the ingredients of your hemp-derived CBD oil before giving it to your pets. CBD oils from unverified manufacturers can contain other ingredients that may not be suitable for your pet. Please do not give pets products that contain more than 0.3% THC content. This can be verified through a certificate of analysis (COA).

How much to give?

The good news is that most animals won’t require much. With CBD oils and tinctures, you are working with single drops, not dropper fulls.

One of our favorite hemp companies, Lazarus Naturals, makes a specific line of pet CBD tincture and offers a simple guide of how many drops you should be giving as a serving for your pet, based on weight. Keep in mind, the recommended drops in the picture only apply with this Lazarus Naturals product, as the concentration of cannabinoids will be different with each company’s CBD oil.

Standard dose based on weight:

  • Less than 15lbs – 1.5mg CBD
  • 15 to 30 lbs – 3mg CBD
  • 30 to 60lbs – 5mg CBD
  • Over 60 lbs – 10mg CBD

Titrate by giving small dosages and increasing overtime if needed. Monitor your animals results and consult a licensed vet as needed.

Pro-Tip

If you are having trouble getting your animal to consume the hemp CBD oil because of the taste, try placing the drops of CBD oil directly onto their favorite food or treat.
