Hemp butter is, quite simply, standard culinary butter that has been infused with the compounds of the hemp plant.  It’s produced by infusing butter with the flower of the hemp plant, known as CBD flower, so that what you end up with is a butter that can be used in a variety of recipes, while being extremely rich in the compounds of the plant including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and even nutrients.

Hemp butter is a staple of making baked edibles such as brownies, cookies, cakes and savory treats like biscuits and crackers.  Essentially, any recipe that calls for standard butter can act as a vehicle for hemp butter instead.  Simply replace the butter in a recipe with hemp butter, and now you have yourself a batch of homemade edibles that are as tasty as they are capable of satisfying your cannabidiol-related goals.

The process is actually surprisingly simple, quick, and mess-free.

Step #1: Grab Your Materials

First, you’ll want to make sure that you have everything you need to successfully make a batch of hemp butter.

  • Raw CBD flower buds: The standard hemp butter recipe that produces a cup of butter calls for 2 cups of raw flower buds, before they have been broken up into smaller pieces. You can adjust this amount by increasing or decreasing it if you want a more or less potent CBD level in each serving size of what you plan on making.  With the CBD flower buds, choose any strain that you’d like.  However, make sure you go for high-quality flower from a trusted company.
  • A standard baking sheet: Will be used for activating the compounds of the hemp flower prior to producing the butter. Any old baking sheet will do as long as it’s at least 8×10 inches.
  • Parchment paper: Going to line the baking sheet to prevent the buds from sticking to the baking sheet. As the buds bake, they can release oils that cause them to stick.
  • A bud grinder: Used for dry herb is necessary to ensure that the bud pieces are small enough to fully infuse their compounds into the butter.
  • A standard saucepan: You just need something that can hold 2 cups of buds, 2 sticks of butter and a cup of water.
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter: We recommend going with unsalted, as salted butter can be more limiting as most recipes call for it.
  • A strainer: You’ll need to have a small strainer that can fit over the mouth of a standard jar. Otherwise, you will have chunks of raw flower in your butter, which are not necessarily pleasant to chew on.
  • A sanitized jar: What you will use to store the butter. Make sure the jar as well as the lid have been run through a dishwasher on the “sanitize” setting.  Typical Mason jars work perfectly.  It is important that the jar has an airtight seal so that the hemp compounds remain active when stored away.

Step #2: Decarboxylate

Now we can get to work.  First, set your oven at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.  Cover a baking sheet in parchment paper, and scatter the large buds onto the sheet, spreading them out in an even layer.  Bake for 25 minutes.  This process “activates” the compounds, so that they produce specifically potent effects when consumed by the body.

Step #3: Grind

Once the decarboxylation process is complete, grind up the buds, keeping them coarse.

Step #4: Prepare Your Butter Formula

Into your saucepan, combine 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of water and the CBD flower buds that have just come out of the oven.

Step #5: Cook and Infuse

Turn the heat on low, and watch the butter to make sure that it never boils.  If it reaches boiling point, the compounds can degrade and lose their potency.  Cook for 2 and ½ hours.

Step #6: Strain

Now, place a strainer over the mouth of a jar and pour the melted hemp butter into the jar.  The strainer will catch the pieces of buds, which are no longer useful, so that all that you end up with is a smooth and creamy butter.

Step #7: Store

Allow the jar to sit with the lid off until it’s at room temperature.  Then, you can cover the jar and place it into the refrigerator.  Again, make sure that the lid is on airtight.  CBD butter can be stored for up to 6 months.

Step #8: Enjoy

When ready to use your hemp butter, follow a recipe and use the butter as you would ordinary butter.
